How it works manual

Destup colors are easy to recognize because the naming system follows a clear structure. See the manual for starter and how to use the Destup colors system.

Destup: a color system you can understand

Destup is structured, memorable, and designed for digital screens. Move from vibrant colors to subtle greys easily, without guessing or memorizing HEX codes.

1. The 24-part color circle

Destup divides the color spectrum into 24 evenly spaced base hues, labeled from a to x. This division ensures that each hue is distinct yet harmoniously related to its neighbors. By using 24 segments instead of the standard 12 or 16 in other color wheels, Destup allows for finer gradations and more precise control over color relationships.

2. Gradients from color to grey

A unique theoretical principle in Destup is its built-in transition from saturated colors to colored greys. While most color systems or digital palettes allow manual desaturation, Destup integrates this progression structurally. Each hue has a defined saturation-to-grey path, supporting both aesthetic reasoning and practical application in design workflows.

How to read any Destup color

  • Letter = color family
  • First number:
    • 0 = fully saturated
    • 6 = greyish / slightly desaturated
  • Second number:
    • 0–2 = light
    • 3–5 = medium bright
    • 6–9 = dark

This structure transforms color from something abstract into something logical and memorable.

structured saturation and lightness

Each hue has 50 variations organized by saturation and lightness. Saturation levels follow a clear logic:

  • 0-series = fully saturated colors
  • 6-series = slightly colored greys (low saturation)

Lightness is indicated by the second number:

  • 0–2 = light colors
  • 3–5 = medium bright colors
  • 6–9 = dark colors

This structure creates a predictable path from vibrant hues to subtle greys, making color transitions logical, measurable, and easy to memorize.

A logical color language instead of random codes

Destup colors are easy to recognize because the naming system follows a clear structure.

Example: p05

  • p = blue (the hue)
  • 0 = fully saturated
  • 5 = medium bright

Even without seeing the color, you already understand its character.
